Are you ready for API RP 1173?

posted by Mike Hughes

Earlier this year API published their introductory guide to implementing RP 1173 that was written for them by WMC.  You can find the guide on the PipelineSMS website in the documents section.  Since that time, we’ve been developing our next RP 1173 support tool – a comprehensive assessment and improvement plan offering.  Most of the assessments you can find on the market deliver a gap analysis on where your organization stands in respect to the requirements of RP 1173, but we felt that approach was not that useful for Customers, so our assessment goes a step further.  Yes, we’ll give you information on your gaps, but more importantly, we’ll specifically identify what needs to be done in order to close those gaps.

Consider these simple graphics – a gap analysis will give you something like the following outputs, there will be an overall summary by element, and then a more detailed breakdown of the requirements for each element.

While useful, these tables would be a lot more useful if they were accompanied by specific details on what had to be done to close the gaps – and that’s exactly what WMC’s RP1173 assessment service delivers.

API recognized our expertise when they engaged us to write their implementation guide for them and from our experience, Companies implementing management frameworks such as 1173 focus on writing processes and determining what tools and systems to use to execute those processes.  Whilst important steps, these are not the way to start your implementation – there are two far more important aspects that need to be tackled before you look at process and tools and neglecting these two factors are the main reason so many Companies struggle to fully implement and derive actual performance improvements from their management frameworks and systems; it’s something we’ve seen on multiple occasions.  With RP 1173 rapidly becoming a de-facto standard for USA based pipeline companies, many organizations are asking themselves ‘where do we stand against the standard’.  If you are in that position, pick the supplier that not only identifies gaps for you, but also details what to do in order to close those gaps.  It’s simply a better form of assessment.
